SQ2242DW - Great Gray Owl (#SZB) by Dan Waltz
You never forget the first time. The last day of my first trip to Sax Zim Bog (#SZB) produced this gem about 20 minutes before sunrise. -30 degrees that morning driving down Zim Road. It was very dark and I would have kept driving if I didn’t catch of a Great Gray shaking off the cold in the corner of my eye. It was my first time seeing a Great Gray in the wild, and it was close to pitch dark. I slowly backed the car up, placed a beanbag on the window ledge and dialed my ISO up to 10,000. It was so dark I had trouble finding him in my view finder. I shot multiple images guessing at the exposures and hoping to get some kind of image to take home. To my surprise several came out better than I could ask for. It made my trip and was as experience I’ll never for get. It hangs proudly on a 24” x 36” canvas in our foyer.
